If further proof were needed that progressive policies are destructive, you only need to look to Seattle, Washington. We have already seen that the city’s policies have made major companies consider leaving the state. But it appears they could be having the same impact on their law enforcement agencies.
According to a recent report by Q13 Fox, a significant number of the Emerald City’s police officers have left to work in police departments in other cities due to politics. The city’s police union has indicated that this exodus could spell trouble for the citizens of Seattle.
The Exodus Of Seattle Police Officers
Seattle Police Guild Vice President, Rich O’ Neill, told Fox News that the lack of police officers is becoming an issue. He said: “Less officers on the streets, less safe for the citizens — and when you have all these officers you have invested all this money in and they are leaving for Tacoma, Olympia, Pierce County and Snohomish County.”
The Vice President went on to state that officers are hesitant to perform their normal duties because of the flood of criticism heaped on the department by Seattle’s left-leaning government. “It’s just depressing to serve in a place where many City Council members who are coming out at times with negative comments about the police,” he said.
An example of the Seattle Council’s treatment of the police can be seen in members Mike O’ Brien and Kshama Sawant’s recent criticism of law enforcement. They called two officers murderers soon after they were involved in a shooting. But that’s not the end of it. Seattle’s leaders also pressure officers to let certain low-level offenses go. “It’s told from the start it’s not a priority, homeless issues also bring with it car prowls, break-ins, open-air drug markets, needles all over the ground, it’s the worst I’ve ever seen it,” O’ Neill complained.
The Seattle Police Department did state that they are “not seeing a huge spike in officers leaving so far compared to previous years.” Indeed, over the past few years, they hired more officers than the ones who left. However, it appears that they may not be retaining enough law enforcement officials to keep up with the growing population, which could be a key factor in the city’s rising crime rates.
Seattle’s Progressive Policies Are Not Keeping People Safe
While Seattle’s homicide rate isn’t as high as cities like Chicago, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, its violent crime rate is higher than the national average and is on an upward trend. At 27 homicides in 2017, the city’s murder rate was the highest it has been since 2008. The city also has one of the nation’s highest property crime rates. Last year, it was ranked at sixth highest in this area. The following chart shows Seattle’s crime rates from 2012 to 2017.
When comparing Seattle to the rest of the nation, it becomes apparent that the Emerald City has a serious issue with crime. In 2016, the city’s violent crime rate was almost double the national average. The same is also true of property crime. Unfortunately, while property crime is on a slight decline from 2016 to 2017, it is still much higher than it was in 2012. Moreover, the city’s violent crime rate has consistently climbed over the same time period.
The Democrats’ Approach To Crime Does Not Work
It’s easy to pick on Seattle when it comes to the utter irrationality of progressive politics. After all, this is a city that is so woke, one of its council members argued that power washing the city’s feces-infested streets is racist. Seattle’s approach to drug abuse is so flawed, even its sea animals had traces of opioids in their bodies. Unfortunately, the citizens of the Emerald City are not the only ones suffering from a rising crime rate, other cities are doing much worse than Seattle.
The vast majority of the nation’s cities with the highest rates of crime are controlled by Democrats. We have all heard of the horrific murder rate in the city of Chicago. Violence has become such an issue that the city’s residents have turned out in droves to purchase firearms. The Windy City’s own police force has advocated for the removal of Mayor Rahm Emanuel because of his penchant for making their jobs more difficult.
Baltimore, Philadelphia, and the District of Columbia also have troubling crime rates. Unfortunately, leftist policies do nothing to address the issues; indeed, they often exacerbate it. When a city’s government makes it harder for law enforcement to protect and serve, they only empower criminals to commit more crimes. This does not seem to be a hard concept to grasp, but unfortunately, Democratic politicians haven’t seemed to figure it out yet. Unfortunately, it will be those under their governance that will continue to suffer the consequences.
