It appears that the United States isn’t quite as patriotic as it used to be. A recent Gallup poll reveals that the number of Americans who say they are proud of their country has sunk to a record low.
The data also shows distinct differences in national pride among Republicans and Democrats. While the results of the poll are not surprising, it does provide insights into how the recent elections have influenced our attitudes about the United States.
Proud To Be American
The number of individuals who state they are proud to be American has fluctuated over the past decade. In 2002, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the number rose to 70%. Since then, it has gradually decreased. The 2018 poll shows that only 47% of Americans are proud of their national heritage, a 4% drop from 2017.
While the number of people who are “extremely proud” to be American has dropped, the majority of Americans are at least somewhat proud of their country. Twenty-five percent stated that they are “very proud,” 16% indicated that they are “moderately proud,” and 72% were either extremely or very proud to be American, which is still the lowest since Gallup began documenting this metric.
The Breakdown On Party Lines
Gallup also looked at how the numbers broke down according to political beliefs. About one third (32%) of Democrats said they were extremely proud to be American — this was an 11% drop from 2017 — while 74% of Republicans were extremely proud — a 2% increase from last year.
In general, Democrats are typically less likely to say that they are extremely proud of being American than Republicans, but in 2018, there was a 42% disparity between the two groups. The data shows that the main reason for the dramatic overall drop in Americans being extremely proud of their country is Democrats becoming less proud to be Americans.
Reasons For The Decrease
There are obvious reasons for the difference in the attitudes of Democrats and Republicans when it comes to pride in the United States. When President Trump was elected, many on the left were demoralized, especially because the majority of polling data showed that Hillary Clinton was sure to win. Moreover, the far left has repeatedly attempted to make the president look like the second coming of Adolph Hitler. Many on the left have contracted serious cases of Trump Derangement Syndrome which causes them to view the country through their anti-Trump lens. Given this reality, it is no wonder that fewer Democrats are proud of their country.
On the other hand, Republicans who supported Trump were buoyed by their unexpected victory in 2016. Not only did the GOP win the election, but it also retained control of Congress and most of the country’s governorships. They also had great success in local government. Moreover, many on the right appreciate the president’s no-nonsense manner — especially when dealing with foreign leaders. Unlike his predecessor, President Trump does not apologize for America. He constantly expresses his love of country, which is something that right-leaning individuals appreciate.
Of course, there are other reasons for the shift in patriotic fervor that are less apparent, especially when it comes to the attitudes of the Democrats. Over the past decade, the far left has all but taken over the Democratic Party. These individuals are not exactly known for their love of country. Indeed, their rhetoric has painted an appalling portrait of the United States, depicting the nation as a constant purveyor of racism, xenophobia, oppression, and slavery.
To the far left, the United States of America is the sum of its flaws and historical missteps. The blights on the country’s history have blinded them to the fact that Americans have worked hard to rectify the country’s past sins and have made incredible progress. Their ideology has become so unhinged that they refuse to acknowledge that every single country in existence has blemishes on their historical records.
Since Democrats have largely embraced the extreme left’s bleak picture of America, it is not surprising that so many of them are no longer extremely proud of their country. They have believed the lies of the establishment media and Democratic Party leaders, and as a result, they are unable to see the greatness of their nation. Unfortunately for the Democrats, their disdain for America is not attracting people to their cause; it is repelling them. Here’s the bottom line: The Democrats will never win over America-loving individuals until they stop denigrating their country.
