Low-Power Wide-Area Networks Gain IoT Footholds | Power content from Electronic Design

Until recently, most technologies within the Internet of Things (IoT) were been forced to transmit data over satellite and cellular networks. These networks operate over complex protocols and consume large amounts of power because they have to transmit large amounts of data from smartphones and other advanced devices.

Even though the infrastructure is well-established, these networks are often considered too expensive for IoT technologies, which incorporate thousands of low-power, low data-rate devices.
